Victorious 2.0: Even Music from the Hit TV Show is the first extended play with music from the American Nickelodeon television series Victorious, performed by actress and singer Victoria Justice. It was released on May 30, 2012 by Nickelodeon and Columbia Records. This is the debut EP release in Justice's career. It was a follow-up to Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show, released on August 2, 2011, and later followed-up by Victorious 3.0: Even More Music from the Hit TV Show, released on November 6, 2012.

Background and release[]

Victorious, a sitcom starring Victoria Justice as protagonist Tori Vega and in which characters perform songs in various episodes, debuted on Nickelodeon on March 27, 2010. The first season concluded on March 26, 2011. The second season aired later that year, from April 2 to December 26. 13 songs performed during these seasons were included on the soundtrack album titled Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show, released on August 2, 2011. The album was a success, reaching number five on the Billboard 200 in the United States, while also appearing on the charts in Austria, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. It included singles such as "Freak the Freak Out", "Beggin' on Your Knees", and "Best Friend's Brother", which managed to appear on the Billboard Hot 100.

As the series was successful, it was renewed for a third season. It officially premiered on January 28, 2012. In an interview for On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Justice revealed she was working on a new soundtrack for the show.[1] Although Victorious continued to gain popularity, even being nominated for Emmy Awards, Justice told for the first time to M magazine there won't not be a fourth season.[2] However, Nickelodeon decided to split the already filmed third season into two separate seasons. This caused the third season to officially end on June 30.

The record, titled Victorious 2.0: More Music from the Hit TV Show, was announced via a press release by Columbia Records on May 9, 2012.[3] It became available for pre-order the same month as a digital download on iTunes and on compact disc with an additional autographed photo of Justice, with a release date of June 5.[4] However, it became available earlier for exclusive listening on the AOL website on May 30.[5] The record was released in the United Kingdom on September 17 and in Australia on November 9.[6][7] Unlike Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show, which is a full-length album, this one is only considered an extended play.

Content[]

Since Victorious 2.0: More Music from the Hit TV Show is only considered an extended play, it has fewer songs than the previous album with music from Victorious. The standard edition consists of six songs, and the deluxe edition includes an additional song, "I Think You're Swell". Both editions were released digitally and on compact disc (even though "I Think You're Swell" was announced in the press release as an iTunes exclusive track).[3][8][9][10][11] These seven songs are a selection from those performed in the third season of Victorious.

The cover shows the main cast posing for the camera together. In the top row are, from left to right: Matt Bennett, Elizabeth Gillies, Victoria Justice, Ariana Grande, and Daniella Monet. Grande is wearing the dress she wore in the episode "Driving Tori Crazy". In the bottom row are Leon Thomas III and Avan Jogia in a squatting position. Everyone, except Jogia, holds the microphone. Unlike its predecessor, the back cover features only Justice posing in a prone position. Additionally, this photo session doesn't feature a puppet named Rex Powers, also one of the characters in the series.

Like the previous album, this EP is credited as being performed entirely by the Victorious cast and Justice. Justice is credited as the featured artist of every song, except "I Think You're Swell", performed by Bennett. Gillies and Thomas are credited as co-featured performers of "Take a Hint" and "Countdown", respectively, duets with Justice. Although Grande, Jogia, and Monet aren't credited as performers on any of the songs, they provide vocals on some of them.

Writing and recording[]

Of the extended play's seven total songs, five were written specifically for it; the only exception are a cover of "Don't You (Forget About Me)", originally released by Simple Minds in 1985, and "I Think You're Swell", which, although written and performed by series cast member Matt Bennett, was originally released on his debut EP Warm Fuzzies Vol. 1 on May 20, 2012, but a new version was created for the series.[12]

As with the previous record, Victoria Justice and Leon Thomas III each contributed to writing one of the songs – Justice co-wrote "Make It in America" and Thomas co-wrote "Countdown". "Countdown" was possibly written on May 17, 2011.[13] Justice spoke about the creation of "Make it in America" in an interview with ClevverTV. She was inspired to write a song with this title after she overheard her mother (Serene Justice) talking on the phone with her music manager about someone out of the country who "make it in America". Justice wrote and recorded it with Martin Johnson in his temporary studio for only six to eight hours. While she was doing press for Victorious in Europe, Johnson e-mailed her with the finished song. After she downloaded and played it in the car, she and her mother fell in love with this track.

On September 30, 2011, Justice tweeted she would be recording a song for the third season of Victorious, possibly marking the beginning of recording sessions for this extended play.[14] "Make It in America" is believed to be written and recorded between February 5 and March 24, 2012.[15][16] Recording dates for other tracks are unknown, but Justice uploaded on Instagram she was recording in the studio on May 27, though it's unconfirmed if it was about the music for this record.[17]

Composition and reception[]

Heather Phares of AllMusic gave Victorious 2.0: More Music from the Hit TV Show three and a half stars out of five, half more than the same website had previously given Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show. Phares noted "Victoria Justice's commanding vocals are the main attraction here" in the songs "Make It in America" and "Shut Up and Dance". However, she felt "Countdown", "Take a Hint", and "Don't You (Forget About Me)" "round out this sequel to Victorious' upbeat but not too slick pop songs".[18]

Commercial performance[]

In the United States, Victorious 2.0: More Music from the Hit TV Show sold 17,000 copies in its first week, 24,000 fewer than Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show.[19] This resulted in it debuting at number 18 on both the Billboard 200 (where it spent a total of eight weeks) and Top Current Album Sales (where it spent a total of 11 weeks) charts, number one on Kid Albums (where it spent a total of 23 weeks), and number two on Top Soundtracks (where it spent a total of 17 weeks). By the end of 2012, it was documented the extended play had sold 70,000 copies in the country.[20] It managed to be placed on the year-end version of the Kid Albums chart at number 17 (seven places lower than the previous album).[21]

Outside the United States, the EP managed to chart in the United Kingdom. It originally debuted at number 44 on the UK Compilation Chart, but was moved after one week to the Official Soundtrack Albums Chart, where it spent a total of 16 weeks and peaked at number 16.

Promotion[]

Single and promotional singles[]

To promote the album, one single and two promotional singles were released, all performed by Victoria Justice. "Countdown", a duet between Leon Thomas III and Justice, was released as the first promotional single on February 10, 2012, exclusively on the AOL website.[92] The song was scheduled to be released on iTunes on February 14, but the date was pushed back to four days later.[93][94] Thomas and Justice performed the song in the episode "André's Horrible Girl", which premiered on February 18. "Take a Hint", Justice's duet with Elizabeth Gillies, was released on February 28 as the second promotional single, also originally on AOL, before being re-released on iTunes on March 3.[95][96] They performed it in the episode "Tori & Jade's Play Date" also aired on March 3. The music video consisted of scenes from various episodes and their production.[97] The song achieved the most success of all on the extended play, peaking at number eight on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 and topping the Kid Digital Song Sales chart, and has since been certified in the United States and United Kingdom.[98][99][100][101]

The only song released as a regular single was "Make It in America", the opening track performed by Justice solo. It was originally available on her SoundCloud account on May 11, with the link available through the website of the magazine Nylon.[102][103] The single was released on music platforms four days later.[104] A music video was made specifically for the song, in which Justice performs the song at a party attended by the rest of the Victorious cast members. It premiered on May 18, the day before Justice performed the song in the series' special episode, "Tori Goes Platinum".[105] "Make It in America" hit Australian radio on November 9.[7] Although the single failed to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 or Bubbling Under Hot 100, it managed to debut at number one on the Kid Digital Song Sales chart, being the second and last song from the EP to do so (after "Take a Hint").[99]

Other songs[]

As with the previous record, some of the other songs were also released on TheSlap, which served as the official website for Victorious. A few of them sounded different than later on the album. "Don't You (Forget About Me)", performed by Victoria Justice, was the first song released from the extended play overall, becoming available on January 30, 2012, two days after it was featured in an episode of "The Breakfast Bunch".[106] The day after it was performed in the episode "April Fools' Blank", "Shut Up and Dance" was released on March 23. TheSlap version is particularly notable in that it's performed by all of the main characters of the series, while the album version is performed by Justice herself.[107] "5 Fingaz to the Face" was performed by Justice and the rest of the cast in the episode "Driving Tori Crazy" on March 14 and released on TheSlap the following day.[108] All songs from the album (except Matt Bennett's "I Think You're Swell" from deluxe version only) managed to appear on the Kid Digital Song Sales chart.[99]

Tours and other live appearances[]

Victoria Justice announced on February 1, 2012, she would embark on her first tour at the end of the summer of that year.[109] Later called the Make It in America Tour, it consisted of 17 shows in the United States, beginning on August 2 in Costa Mesa, California and ending on September 14 in Allegan, Michigan. Her opening act was her friend, collaborator, and fellow Nickelodeon star Max Schneider.[110] Additionally, Justice visited Australia in early November for a press and promo tour when the EP was just starting to be released there. During that time, she promoted and sold her merchandise, including those related to Victorious, co-hosted a fashion show, participated in Q&A, and appeared at autograph signing events.[7]

Apart from the tours, there were also other additional live appearances. On June 21, 2012, Justice performed at Kidz Expo in Chattanooga, Tennessee.[111] The only live television performance in support of this record was on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where Justice sang "Make It in America" in the episode aired on May 15, 2012.[112] The cast of Victorious performed together in the Summer Concert Series at Universal Studios Florida on June 9.[113] Justice had an EP signing event at Walmart in Orlando on June 10.[114]

Victorious Locker Countdown[]

To promote the extended play, an additional website featuring "Victorious Locker Countdown" was launched on May 31, 2012.[115] The website featured the locker of Victoria Justice's Victorious character Tori Vega (although the appearance of this locker was significantly different from the one Tori actually has in the series), along with links to the social media of the series and the pre-order of the EP. Partners for this project were AOL, OceanUp, Celebuzz, Teen Vogue, and Cambio. Every day, one of the project partners published material on their websites with a certain digit. The five digits formed the combination to Tori's locker, able to unlock it on the fifth day.[116]

Trivia[]

  • "Don't You (Forget About Me)" is the longest song and "5 Fingaz to the Face" is the shortest.
  • In order of who from the main cast of Victorious sings the most of the seven songs:
    • Victoria Justice performs every song except "I Think You're Swell" from the deluxe edition. This also means that she performs all six songs on the standard edition.
    • Elizabeth Gillies and Leon Thomas III each perform three songs, though Gillies is credited only for "Take a Hint" and Thomas for "Countdown". They both also provide vocals on "5 Fingaz to the Face" and "Don't You (Forget About Me)".
    • Matt Bennett and Ariana Grande each perform two songs. Bennett is credited as the performer of "I Think You're Swell", additionally providing vocals on "5 Fingaz to the Face". Grande also sings "5 Fingaz to the Face" as well as "Don't You (Forget About Me)".
    • Although Avan Jogia and Daniella Monet aren't credited as performers on any of the songs, they both provide vocals on "5 Fingaz to the Face" along with the rest of the cast.
  • In addition to the Victorious main cast, four other people also provided vocals on the songs.
  • On the physical releases of Victorious 2.0: More Music from the Hit TV Show and Apple Music, "5 Fingaz to the Face" is credited as being performed only by the "Victorious cast".[10] Justice is separately credited as the featured performer only on streaming platforms such as Spotify and Tidal.[11][117]
  • Jake Farrow, one of the vocal providers in "5 Fingaz to the Face", is listed as "Rex Powers", the puppet he voiced in Victorious, on the credit lines of Victorious 2.0: More Music from the Hit TV Show. This is probably done because Farrow was always uncredited in the series to give the illusion Rex is voiced by his best friend and ventriloquist Robbie Shapiro (portrayed by Bennett).
  • Although performed in the same episode as "Make It in America", "Cheer Me Up" wasn't included on this extended play. Justice's version of this song was unreleased until it was placed on the deluxe version of Victorious 3.0: Even More Music from the Hit TV Show.
