"Shake" is a song performed by American actress and singer Victoria Justice, co-written with Hayley Gene Penner and its producers Adam Messinger, Sir Nolan, and Nasri. It was released on June 18, 2013, as the B-side for Justice's single "Gold".[1]
Background and release[]
Victoria Justice and Nasri, the song's co-writer and co-producer, hinted the song on social media in March 2013.[2] In early June, Justice announced she would be releasing her debut solo single, "Gold". When the single was commercially released on June 18, "Shake" was also released as its B-side.[1] Probably both songs were supposed to appear on Justice's upcoming debut studio album. However, this is highly unlikely now, as she has left Columbia Records, the label responsible for their release, as revealed by Billboard in a 2014 article.[3]
The line "Put out your Michael J. moves" refers to the late singer Michael Jackson and how he was known for incorporating dance extensively into his work. "Shake" is Justice's second song in which he's mentioned, after "All I Want Is Everything".
Promotion[]
"Shake" was part of the setlist for Victoria Justice's second tour, the Summer Break Tour, which ran from June 21 to August 15, 2013. On the same day the tour ended, she also performed the song at the Zumba Fitness-Concert.[4]
On September 25, Justice announced the song would receive a music video featuring a Zumba dance.[5] She later posted some previews of the clip.[6][7] The music video premiered a day later on her official YouTube channel. It features Justice, dance instructor and Zumba's co-founder Beto Pérez, and two background dancers. For the first half of the video, Pérez teaches the dance moves to the song, dividing them into four sections. In the second half they perform the actual dance with the song in the background. In an interview with Self magazine, Justice revealed she loves Zumba, the dance lasted much longer than the seven-minute video, and she enjoyed working with Pérez.[8]
