"Beggin' on Your Knees" (also known as "Beggin'") is a song performed by American actress and singer Victoria Justice, written by Savan Kotecha and Shellback, and produced by Shellback and Kristian Lundin, for the Nickelodeon television series Victorious. It was originally released on the channel's website on March 9, 2011, and later commercially re-released on April 1, as the second single from the series' soundtrack album, Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show, on which it was included as the fourth track.[1][2]

Release[]

The song was made available on the Nickelodeon website on March 9, 2011.[1] On March 15, Tiger Beat announced the song would be released on iTunes on April 5.[3] However, Victoria Justice announced later on her website it would be released on April 1 instead, revealing its cover artwork. On the artwork, Justice is wearing the same cream blouse she wore in one of the scenes in the music video.[1] Oddly, on Justice's Myspace account, the single release is named "victorious soundtrack" and dated April 8. It also has a different cover artwork featuring Justice wearing a white shirt, black skirt, and purple jacket, and holding a microphone, and the title of the song shortened to "Beggin'".[4]

"Beggin' on Your Knees" was confirmed for inclusion on the first soundtrack album, originally announced for release on July 12, however the date was pushed back for unknown reasons.[1] Columbia Records and Nickelodeon later confirmed it would be the fourth track on the album, released under the title Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show on August 2.[5]

Th ikNaqi

"Beggin' on Your Knees" was performed by Tori Vega (portayed by Victoria Justice) in the episode of the same name, that premiered on April 2, 2011. Everyone from the chorus class, including Tori, has to perform a solo or a duet at the Full Moon Jam. A handsome classmate, Ryder Daniels (portrayed by Ryan Rottman, Justice's then-boyfriend), who she's attracted to, goes on a date with her and later asks if they will perform together, to which she agrees. However, it's later revealed Ryder uses the girls who are dating him only to get a good grade. After finding out about it, Tori decides to write a song about him with her best friend, André Harris (portrayed by Leon Thomas III). At the showcase, Ryder realizes his microphone isn't working and Tori will perform a different song herself. He's unable to leave the stage as its both sides are blocked either by teachers or by Robbie Shapiro (portrayed by Matt Bennett) and Beck Oliver (portrayed by Avan Jogia). After finishing the song, Ryder runs off stage and Tori receives applause from the audience.

"Beck Falls for Tori"[]

"Beggin' on Your Knees" is also heard in the next episode, "Beck Falls for Tori", that premiered on April 16, 2011. Instead of performing the song, it was played in the background in a scene at the Asphalt Café. After half of the first verse, Victoria Justice's vocals were lowered to focus more on the characters' dialogue.

Composition and reception[]

Common Sense Media's Jessica Dawson gave three stars out of five, complimenting "this catchy song is great for dancing and sleepovers and will probably have fans beggin' for more", though she noted while lyrics "are free of sex and profanity", they still "might be a little harsh for younger kids, even in their playful tone".[6] In a 2014 article, Jason Lipshutz of Billboard wrote both "Beggin' on Your Knees" and "Best Friend's Brother" "zip along with compact hooks and unabashed attitude", also claiming these songs and "Freak the Freak Out" reveal more about Victoria Justice's musical abilities than her then-latest single, "Gold".[7] Megan Gaertner of Her Campus placed the song on the third place of the best songs from Victorious, writing Justice "really popped off on this one".[8]

Commercial performance[]

"Beggin' on Your Knees" was sold in 28,000 downloads in the first week, which resulted in debuting at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[9] The song eventually peaked at number 58 and spent four weeks in total there. The song spent four weeks and reached number 35, the highest of Justice's all songs, on the Digital Songs chart. It debuted at the top of the now-discontinued Kid Digital Song Sales chart, becoming her first song to achieve number one there. The song spent four weeks at the top and 57 weeks overall on this chart. "Beggin' on Your Knees" spent seven weeks and peaked at the 19th position, also the highest of all her songs, on another discontinued chart, Pop Digital Song Sales.

It was one of the five songs by Justice to appear on the 2011 Kid Digital Song Sales year-end chart, with the others being "Best Friend's Brother", "Make It Shine", "Leave It All to Shine", and "I Want You Back". "Beggin' on Your Knees" peaked at number two, the highest of all these songs. It was blocked by Big Time Rush's "Boyfriend".[10]

Music video[]

Beggin'

The same day of the song's release on the Nickelodeon website, Victoria Justice announced the music video would be released on March 12, 2011. She uploaded per one photo every day from the video's set from March 9 to March 12.[35] On March 10, E! announced they would publish a day later a sneak-peek at the making of the video.[36] The music video was directed by Marcus Wagner, who also previously worked on the video for "Freak the Freak Out", at the Santa Monica Pier. The full behind-the-scenes video was posted by Tiger Beat on March 15.

The video starts with Justice and her boyfriend walking and having fun by the water. In the next scene, she appears with the other Victorious main cast members on the carnival, where they all ride the carousel, take photos in a photo booth, eat cotton candy, and sit on the Ferris Wheel. However, at one point, she catches her boyfriend with another girl (portrayed by Halston Sage) together playing a ring toss game and hugging. She keeps catching her boyfriend and that girl in the park, remembering their time together when they took photos and were on the wheel. While they're playing a water gun game, she finally decides to tell the girl by ear he's cheating on them, so the girl decides to aim water at his face. Additional scenes feature the singer performing and dancing on a Skee-Ball, darts and bottle ball toss games with park workers and under the jetty.

Live performances[]

Victoria Justice performed "Beggin' on Your Knees" for the first time at the 24th Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards pre-show that was held on April 2, 2011, right before the premiere of the Victorious episode in which the song was perfomed as well. She performed the single at the Los Angeles County Fair on September 17, 2011. The song was a part of the setlist of Justice's 2013 second concert tour, Summer Break Tour.

Contest[]

Just like with "Freak the Freak Out", Victoria Justice tweeted on April 22, 2011 there would be the "Beggin' on Your Knees" contest.[37] Sponsored by Columbia Records, it was finally announced on May 10 on her YouTube channel. People entering the competition had to be at least 13 years old, resident in the United States, subscribe Justice's YouTube channel, and follow her Twitter account. The competition task was to upload on YouTube a video of answering why the video's author should win and then enter Justice's website for a chance to win. There would be five winners chosen. The first place was to win a trip to the then-upcoming Victorious: Walmart Soundcheck mini-concert to meet Justice and the cast of the series, second place was to win an iPod Touch, third place was to win a Skype chat with Justice, and fourth place was to win the video shout out from her. All winners were also to get an autographed "Beggin' on Your Knees" poster. The contest ended on May 18.[38]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
You had it all
The day you told me, told me you want me
I had it all
But let you fool me, fool me completely

[Pre-chorus 1]
Yeah, I was so stupid
To give you all my attention
'Cause the way you played me
Exposed your true intentions

[Chorus]
And one day
I'll have you beggin' on your knees for me
Yeah, one day
I'll have you crawling like a centipede
You messed with me and messed with her
So I'll make sure you get what you deserve
Yeah, one day
You'll be beggin' on your knees for me

[Verse 2]
So watch your back
'Cause you don't know when or where I could get you
I've set the trap
And when I'm done, then you'll know what I've been through

[Pre-chorus 2]
So, oh, mister player
Do you feel like the man now?
And I bet you're nervous
'Cause this song makes you freak out

[Chorus]
And one day
I'll have you beggin' on your knees for me
Yeah, one day
I'll have you crawling like a centipede
You messed with me (yeah) and messed with her (yeah)
So I'll make sure you get what you deserve (yeah)
Yeah, one day
You'll be beggin' on your knees for me

[Bridge]
I know I'm being bitter, but I'mma drag you under
'Cause you just don't, don't deserve happy ever after
For what you did to me, after you told me
You never felt that way
It was only just a game
(You had it all, had it all, had it all, had it all)
And one day

[Chorus]
And one day
I'll have you beggin' on your knees for me (beggin' on your knees for me)
Yeah, one day
I'll have you crawling like a centipede (crawling like a centipede)
You messed with me (yeah) and messed with her (yeah)
So I'll make sure you get what you deserve (yeah)
Yeah, one day
You'll be beggin' on your knees for me
